One Small Change That Could Transform Your Client’s Business

Are your clients making financial decisions based on incomplete or misleading data?

One common mistake could be hiding the true profitability of their farm—and it all comes down to how they categorize grant funding in QuickBooks.

I was working with a farmer who was confident their business was profitable. Their QuickBooks reports showed strong revenue (and profit!) and on paper, everything looked great.

🚨 The problem? A significant chunk of that “revenue” was actually grant funding.

While grants can be helpful, they’re not a reliable, ongoing income source, especially now. The farmer wasn’t truly earning profits from their products; they were relying on external funding to cover their costs.

The Key Lesson: Revenue is NOT Profit

🔹 Profitability isn’t about total revenue—it’s about whether the sales of your products and services cover production costs, overhead, and investments in the business.

🔹 Including grant funding in the regular income stream masks real business performance.

🔹 The fix? Categorize grants correctly in QuickBooks—as “Other Income”—so they don’t inflate the farm’s operational revenue. I show you what I mean in the video below.
