Beyond the P&L is a 4-session live class that will help you understand the story behind the numbers, so you can help your clients build businesses that are not just profitable—but sustainable.

➡️ Understand why a profitable business still doesn't have cash
➡️ Recognize if operations are funded through profits or if increasing debt is sustaining it
➡️ Spot operating challenges that impact cash (like inventory or receivables)
➡️ Plan for financing with a balance sheet that lenders want to see

In short, you'll recognize all the important details of the business that can only be found on the balance sheet.

You can read a profit & loss statement.

You know the basics of the balance sheet.

But when a client asks:

? “If I’m profitable, why don’t I have cash?”
? “Where did the money go?”
? “Can I afford this investment?”

...things start to get a little murky.

You’re not alone.

Most advisors were never taught how to connect the three financial statements in a meaningful, practical way.

And that’s exactly what this course is designed to fix.

Imagine this...

You sit down with a client…

and instead of just reviewing reports, you can:

✔ Explain exactly why cash is tight—even when profits look good

✔ Spot issues in their financials within minutes

✔ Walk them through how a decision will impact their business before they make it

✔ Confidently connect the dots between all three financial statements

That’s the shift.

From reporting → to real insight.

About the Instructor

Hi, I’m Julia Shanks, author of The Farmer’s Office and 3-time entrepreneur. Since 2008, I’ve been working with farmers and market gardeners around North America to help them get a handle on their numbers and build financially sustainable businesses.

I came to this career after 15 years of working as a chef, getting an MBA in entrepreneurship, and launching my own businesses. Though I’m not a farmer, I know the challenges from my years of cheffing. I know what it’s like to work on your feet all day, in a hot kitchen (maybe as hot as a summer field of squash and tomatoes), working with sharp objects, burning and cutting myself.  I know what it’s like to worry about payroll and finding new customers. And I’ve had to think long and hard about how to price my catering events so that I can cover my costs, pay my workers, and have something left over.

Now, after working with hundreds of farmers) and seeing similar challenges, I wanted to package up what I learned, along with the tools I created, to help as many farmers as possible achieve financial sustainability.

My goal with this course is to

  • Understand how profit, cash flow, and the balance sheet connect to tell a cohesive story
  • Confidently analyze financial data and trust what you’re seeing
  • Guide your clients toward better, more sustainable financial decisions

Because this isn’t just about understanding the numbers.

It’s about using them to help businesses grow in a way that’s thoughtful, strategic, and sustainable.
